With spring in the air and everything turning so green, I am feeling really motivated to work on the outdoor spaces around my house. I still haven’t had a chance to make a trip to the greenhouse for my annuals, but hopefully I will soon! Today I’ve been cleaning up my deck and patio spaces, and I’ve been browsing online for the perfect outdoor area rug.

We have an entire wrap around porch on the side and back of our house that we’ve really done nothing with. I’d love to have an outdoor dining set to eat meals at in the summer, but that’s not in the budget for now. There are so many awesome DIY tutorials on outdoor dining tables, and I’m tempted to try one. Obviously, this little dining table is a little small for a family of 6!
Below is a picture of the porch at the back of my house. I finally got around to wiping down this little table. The ivy plant I saved from my planters at the end of the summer last year, and I managed to keep it alive to put outside again. We’ve had these patio chairs for a number of years now (purchased at Costco). I would love to get an outdoor rug for this space. It’s probably the area of the deck that gets the most use because you can see the kids’ playground set from here, and it’s also where the barbecue is.
Below is a picture of part of our lower patio/walkout basement area.
Today my boys helped me hose down the furniture and put the cushions back on. We keep the cushions in a deck storage box over the winter, and when I pulled them out of the box, I got a bit of a surprise! A couple wasps flew out and a little wasp nest fell off the cushion. I let out a scream but it appears that that was it for the wasps! And no one got stung, so all was fine! The patio also needed a good sweeping off, as it was covered in grass, leaves and sand that my kids dumped here from their sandbox. Hosing down the furniture was great fun for the kids, and we even managed to keep my son’s arm cast dry! Poor kid broke his arm when he fell off the monkey bars a couple days ago.
Our siding needs a good pressure wash by the looks of it, but I didn’t attempt that job today. This patio furniture set was a cheap Walmart purchase a few years ago. We have another area just opposite of this one on the other side of the house, but I have nothing there except a few planters full of dirt that I stored there over the winter. We actually have a lot of deck and patio space that isn’t really being utilized because we don’t have furniture for the space. New patio furniture just isn’t in the budget!
I have an image in my head that this space could really become a relaxing and cozy area for entertaining. I’m picturing string lights, lanterns, topiary plants and cement planters! Of course, I’d also love to pretty up this space with an outdoor area rug.
I’ve written about my front porch before, but here’s another look at our front porch.
All I really have left to do here is fill the pots with plants. My kids picked a huge pile of dandelions and left them in a heap right on the deck, so I had to do a quick sweep of the deck before snapping this picture! I absolutely love my blue and white outdoor rug that I have on my front porch. I love that it’s reversible, because I like to switch things up. One side the main color is blue with white accents and on the other side the main color is white with blue accents. It’s also the easiest thing ever to clean. You can just shake or hose it off. It’s made of recycled plastic straws (which is pretty cool) and is resistant to moisture and mildew. Last year I used this rug as my doormat, and it still looks as good as new! (See my post “Perennial and Porch Planning” for more on my front porch!)
Here’s my rug, available on Amazon.ca. This one is a 5′ x 8′, which is bigger than the 4′ x 6′ one I have!
Below are some other outdoor rug options I love! I found a bunch of beautiful ones on Amazon that I think would work for our deck and patio spaces. I love the calm, cozy and relaxing feel of neutral rugs in an outdoor space, but I also love the fresh and fun feel of a blue or green rug.
Now for a little more color!!!
I also found my favorite door mat on Amazon! Isn’t this “Hello” doormat cute? This is the 2′ x 3′ mat. It also comes in a huge 3′ x 6′ size, which I would LOVE, but I haven’t sprung for it yet!
Here are a few other door mats I love!
This last one just makes me laugh!! I should probably get it!!!
I think the top of my list would be the black and white leaf rug, the grey rug with the wavy stripes, or the neutral sissal rug. Which rugs are your favorites? If you do happen to purchase one of these rugs, I’d love for you to post a photo and tag me on Instagram, @valleyandbirch !!! Thanks for reading!
