The tree is up! Up….as in standing, but still in need of some fluffing and decorations. The kids were SOOO excited about this last night. I could hear cheers as my husband hauled the tree up the stairs from the basement. Our tree is a pre-lit one, and you can either have it on colored lights or white lights, which is loads of fun for the kids of course. There is a button to push that switches the color. My 3 year old apparently only likes the colored lights, because he refuses to leave it on the white lights (my favorite). So my hopes of a more neutral tree this year might be kiboshed. My 1 year old kept waving his arms and hitting the tree with glee! I’m sure our tree will end up being a little top heavy with decorations, with a toddler in the house!
I was doing a bit of rearranging in my house today, and I decided to switch up the decor on my hutch, to be a little more Christmasy. Actually, I should probably say more “wintery”, because this look doesn’t just scream Christmas. It’s more of a neutral look that will work all winter. I’ve been trying to figure out what kind of decor I like for Christmas, and I decided I like a simple, calm and cozy look. I plan to incorporate woods, whites, metal, and greenery into my Christmas decor this year.
I’ve had a table runner on my hutch for a while now, but decided to take that off and keep the space a little more simple. I had this white ceramic lattice lamp downstairs in my office. I decided to bring it upstairs because no one really ever sees it in my basement, and it’s too pretty not to be seen! My lamp is out of stock right now, but if you’re looking for a similar option, I found a couple more white ceramic lamp options that you can view at the end of this post!
I used a piece of burlap and lace ribbon to tie my white berry wreath (from Canadian Tire a few years ago) on an old vintage window. I tacked the ribbon with a small nail on the top of the window. This berry wreath is similar.) I love how this look has a wintery feel. It’ll work for Christmas decor, but also after Christmas.
The “JOY” sign was a cute accent I picked up at HomeSense recently. It has a wood base and the letters are marble. I love it!
The old lantern was from an antique shop. Don’t you think lanterns are the perfect Christmas accent? The cute little lamb’s ear plant I also found at HomeSense. The book is a vintage poetry book that I love the color of, and thought it would work as a coffee table book.
My Christmas cactus will probably begin blooming again next month. It always blooms around Christmas. We’ve had this plant for many years, and it’s done really well compared to other houseplants we’ve owned. It’s pretty low maintenance, and I thought it looked cute perched on this vintage stool. The plant basket is from Ikea. I used a couple scrap 2×4’s in the bottom to raise the pot up a bit.
I found my large seagrass basket at HomeSense, and I love using it for extra pillows and throw blanket storage. I love my charcoal plaid pillow cover, which fits great on my Ikea pillow inserts. My cream-colored throw blanket was from Costco, and we’ve had it for quite a few years. This corduroy plush blanket would also be a nice, thick blanket for cozying up on the couch!
What colors do you plan to use in your Christmas decor this year? Do you like lots of color? Or do you like neutral? I’ll probably cave and add a little red! I’d love to hear your plan in the comments below!
