If you’re like me, you find it hard to find just the right piece of art in a store. I feel like my taste for art changes so quickly, but changing it up often is just too expensive to be an option for me. So…I’ve got some solutions to that problem!
I’ve been working on redecorating my boys’ room since upgrading my son from a crib to big boy bed. I bought my son this metal farmhouse style bed, and we absolutely love it.

Of course, when one changes around the furniture in a room, you find that all your carefully placed wall hangings and art do not work in that location anymore. That was my dilemma as I rearranged things in my sons’ room. I’m not planning to re-paint the room, so I don’t want to end up with extra holes or screws in the wall. Those plastic wall anchors are the worst—you can’t get them out without making a huge mess, and if you leave them alone, they are unsightly. If my husband had his way, our walls would be bare—it drives him crazy when I hang a picture and then change my mind a year or so later about putting it there.
Here’s the “before” picture:
I arranged and rearranged the furniture numerous times. I tried placing the beds on either side of the window, but because there is a little alcove in the room on one side of the window, it didn’t look quite right. Plus, I would have to take down the cute little book ledges (similar ones here) that were above one bed…and then the mirror looked funny with no dresser under it. The other option was to keep the beds in the position they were, but the beds wouldn’t line up because one would be set back in the alcove (and I need symmetry!) Oh, the dilemma….
I finally decided that the beds would go best on the wall opposite the window. I could work with the placement of the shelves, mirror, and the nail holes in the wall the way were currently. With beds placed, now it was time to upgrade the art to “big kid” art. It’s so nostalgic for me to change the art in my kids’ rooms. It’s just another reminder of how fast my kids are growing up!
The Ikea ledges I already had up in this room. (Here are some similar photo ledges). I love them because they are cute and functional. It’s fun to switch the books up (I like to decorate with classic kids books like this one), or decorate with some of my son’s favorite toys, like these Die Cast Stormtroopers or Lego Star Wars figurines.
A while ago I purchased a moon poster off Amazon, and I bought a poster frame at Michael’s to put it in. (This simple poster frame is the same size as the one I bought.) It’s a huge piece of “art” in the room that was relatively inexpensive. My oldest son is really into Lego right now, so we have quite a few Lego creations on display. (We love the Lego Creator sets, because they are 3 in 1 and keep my son busy!) We probably have a little more Legos on display than I would like, but hey, it’s their room, not mine!
The boys both like Star Wars, so I found some great Star Wars watercolor printables on Etsy. I used frames that I already had (I changed out the art I previously had in the nursery) and it was a quick and cheap solution.
I also updated the rug in the boys’ room recently. (For more about the rug I chose, see this post!)
Here are my tips for inexpensive and versatile wall art that you can choose to suit you own personal style:
- Search Etsy for a printable you love. There are tons of options out there that you can get digital downloads of. Then print it at home or take it to your favorite printing store (I like to print things at Costco or Staples).
- Try framing a poster. Posters are usually inexpensive, and a simple poster frame will do. The result will be big art with big impact!
- Find a book with beautiful illustrations that you could frame. Look at a thrift store for a book that maybe brings back memories from childhood, rip the pages out, and frame it! Super cute and inexpensive!
- Make or buy a photo ledge. These give you endless opportunities to arrange and rearrange your favorite photos or objects. You can also use these ledges to display your kid’s favorite books, toys, or Lego figurines. My kids love having their Lego on display for all to see!
- Search pinterest for free printables. There are lots out there—it’s worth a search!
