I am so excited to share with you our mudroom/back entry with you today! This is the door we use 90% of the time. We are actually really lucky because we have built in cupboards for each kid on the other side of the mudroom. The problem is, the kids are still too little to reach the hooks in their lockers, so things end up just getting stuffed in, if at all. Often it’s a toss the coat on the floor or bench situation. I’ve been thinking about putting up a coat rack on the wall in the mudroom for a while now to help with this problem, and finally got around to doing it. It was a really simple process, actually! I wish we had done it sooner!

We cut a 1×4 board to the length we wanted (ours is 4 feet) and I gave it a quick sand with my electric hand sander. I then stained it in a classic grey colour with this stain. I applied it with a brush, then wiped the excess a bit with a rag.
After letting it dry completely for a couple days, I then chalk painted over top of it with this white chalk paint. I used a medium-grit sanding sponge to scuff it up a bit to make it look a little worn, and so the stain showed through.
My husband screwed it to the wall for me. We miscalculated where one of the studs was, so we ended up with an extra screw hole, and the board cracked a bit. But this didn’t bother me because it make the board look more aged.
I found these 3 prong black hooks for my coat rack, and I am really pleased with them! They are strong and sturdy, and with 3 prongs each, they hold a lot of stuff! And this is going to be important in the coming months as we’ve already had to break out the snow pants and winter coats!
My kids helped me choose some pretty fall branches outside to clip off and place in this large vintage crock that I had on hand. I love the pop of color these leaves bring to our entry! I actually cut a bunch of different branches: yellow, red, orange, and green leaves. I preferred the orangey-red ones, but the green ones were pretty too!
These cute little vintage wooden kids’ chairs were a gift for our kids from their great-grandparents. Aren’t they adorable?!! I also love these grey wooden kids’ chairs for a more modern look!
I tried a couple different wreaths and pillows in the space. I was (and still am!) and bit indecisive when it came to choosing which wreath and pillows I wanted to use on display in our entry. I feel like the burlap wreath looks more “fall-ish”. I made the burlap fall wreath the other day (see this post for more about that). The green wreath would work any season, and is simple and classic.
I already had these black and white buffalo plaid pillows and these charcoal plaid pillows. I love both, so I keep going back and forth on which I prefer in the space. The charcoal pillows give a softer and more neutral look, and I think look better with the burlap wreath. The black and white pillows tie in with the black hooks. To be completely honest though, the mudroom is not likely going to look like this for long anyway. I had to clear off a pile of sweaters and coats before taking these “styled” pictures!
I’m really pleased with how our DIY coat rack turned out. The kids are loving it, and they can actually reach the hooks to hang up their coats, so I’m not finding them left on the floor! Which wreath, pillows, and leaves do you like? Comment below—I’d love to hear from you!
