Happy weekend, everyone! The kids had a great week going back to school, and it was super exciting for them because they got to ride the bus home for the first time this week. The kids bus ride is almost an hour, so I’ve been driving the kids to school and only sending them home on the bus. My daughter got to first ride the bus by herself on a day her brother didn’t have kindergarten. We went out to meet her when she got off the bus. Her brother was there waiting, arms outstretched waiting to give her a hug. She was so excited to have rode the bus that she ran right on past him! Poor kid! He missed his sister and she just blew past him! She’s getting to be quite the independent little thing now that she is grade one. She doesn’t want me to walk her up the steps of the school, because she knows where she is going and is always looking to find her friends as soon as we get there.

Now that I have two kids in school and one of them naps in the afternoon, my second youngest and I have lots of one on one time to spend together. The other day we were hanging out in the basement, and whenever I’m down there, the wheels in my head start turning and I start thinking about how I should decorate or rearrange my media room area.
I am so pleased with the grey vintage style rug we bought for our media room a few months ago. It has held up really well with four kids, and is nice and soft on the feet. I bought the 8′ x 11′ size, so it’s huge and works perfect in our media room area! Sometimes I want to steal it for my living room upstairs, because I love it so much! You can read more about my rug in this post!
I had some old vintage books downstairs that I was planning to put in our empty TV console. My son grabbed one and wanted to read it. He likes to read the story to me, but he’s only 3 so doesn’t actually know any of the words. He was really into this old book, and was telling me a story about hippos, gorillas and their tails, and something about penguins too! It was quite the story—inspired by our zoo trip last weekend I’m sure! Once I managed to peel the book out of his hands (he wasn’t being so gentle with it!), I stacked it along with the other vintage books in the TV cabinet.
Our console works great for the TV components, but the shelves aren’t very high, so there isn’t room for anything tall. They are also set back a little ways in the cabinet, so things aren’t super visible. I filled the shelves with the old books, a little basket with some card games, some wooden puzzle boxes, and some little green plants I found at HomeSense.
I love the look of the wood TV console with a pop of greenery, so I was happy to find some faux plants that fit my shelves at HomeSense. I also love these little plants that come in cement pots!
The little green topiary on top of the cabinet was from HomeSense a few years ago. These cute topiaries are similar to mine!
We bought our TV console at Costco. I love it! I searched for quite some time for one that I loved that wasn’t too expensive. I also love these gorgeous TV consoles!
I love the picture ledge above our TV for displaying favourite photos of the kids. Ours is from Ikea, but these picture ledges are similar.
The wall art is from Etsy. I love printables from Etsy because they are cheap art and you can change them up when you tire of them. Aren’t these grey leaf prints gorgeous?! I bought the frames from Michael’s, but these barnwood frames would also be beautiful!
The little rectangular mirror was made by my brother in law. He used a broken mirror to create this piece. Isn’t it creative? I love how unique it is! Our black oversized clock is from HomeSense. I also love this vintage-style oversized clock!
The chunky knit blanket was a gift from my parents a couple years ago, and it is my favourite blanket to curl up with on the couch to watch a movie. We had this huge black leather couch since we got married 14 years ago. It’s a bit big and bulky, but it is so cozy and we love it for lounging on to watch TV.
My cat kept wanting to sneak into the pictures!
The coffee table is an old one from Ikea that we’ve also had since we got married, and it has held up really well. It’s a little on the orangey side for my taste now, so I’ve thought about painting it.
I’ve also considered replacing it with something like these ones below:

I really like that media console! My family just moved into a new home and I’m in need of a lower media console like this one to wall mount my TV. Do you recall the Costco item # or color name of the piece you purchased? It appears they have the same piece, but only in a lighter brown. Thank you for this post. This basement is beautiful.

I wish had more info for you on it! I’m sorry, I don’t have the item number and I don’t see it online. I would probably call the color of it “expresso” although a lighter color may not show the dust as much! I’ve been very happy with it for our media center. Good luck on your hunt!
