Hello all! Canada Day has come and gone, and my husband and I celebrated our 14th wedding anniversary! How have 14 years gone by already? I feel like once we had kids, the time sped up. We have 4 kids 6 and under, so I guess you could say they keep us busy. 4 kids is so much fun, but exhausting of course at times. We spent our anniversary in a pretty low-key fashion—church, potluck picnic lunch, and then a relaxing afternoon at home. I even got to sneak in a nap while my husband watched the kids! The kids have been having a blast riding their bikes up and down the driveway. So glad we had it paved, because it makes for such a fun and easy place to ride bikes. My daughter recently learned to ride her bike without training wheels, so my husband got his exercise running up and down the driveway behind her a bazillion times. So that, my friends, was a good weekend!
The other night the power went out, so lounging on the couch and watching TV after the kids were in bed wasn’t an option. Also, my phone died, and obviously I couldn’t charge it. So anything technology related was out of the question. So what to do with the power out? I decided to rearrange the bookshelf! I was feeling like it was looking a bit cluttered before. I love displaying family photos, but I had too many crammed in, and there was really no rhyme or reason to how I displayed things. I took everything off, dusted and wiped down the shelves, and then began trying out out new places for everything. It took me a few tries, but I finally got things placed in a manner I was happy with.
Lately I’m loving vintage accents, and I found the vintage crocks on Kijiji. My dad gave me the old vinegar jars that he had collected from his old farmhouse, and the vintage books were antique or thrift shop finds. I left a few photos on display too, but not nearly as many as I had out before.
The lawyer’s bookcases were a wedding gift 14 years ago, made by my husband’s grandpa. Aren’t they amazing?! I like to keep some of the glass covers open to display things, but I usually leave the bottom half closed. They are probably my favorite pieces of furniture in my home. I love that they are heirloom pieces that can be passed down to the next generation.
I bought the small wire basket at Michaels. I bought two of them for my son’s nursery, but I’m always borrowing them and moving them from room to room around the house. I love switching up the decor in these baskets! Right now they contain some old books and a small candle jar that I bought at the dollar store. I may need to pick up some more wire baskets, because they are so versatile and I wish I had a few more!
I found these FREE botanical prints on Pinterest, available on the blog “A Daily Something”.
I love how they look in these frames that I bought at Michaels. They are my absolute favorite frames because of their they look like barnwood. I have numerous barnwood style frames in rooms throughout my home. These particular ones are 11 x 14 inch frames, matted to 8 x 10. I had the prints printed at Staples on linen resume paper, although I’m sure plain white paper or cardstock would have been fine too. Honestly, in the frames, you can’t really tell I had them printed on special paper. I usually recommend cardstock for prints like this, as it’s a little heavier duty and holds up better than plain paper.
Here are some similar frames. I love the driftwood color!
My husband and I recently made the blanket ladder, and I got the tutorial from the highlighted stories on the Instagram account @willowbloomhome. She shares so many great ideas, and her blanket ladders are also available to buy on her etsy page. I love that she’s given you a little tutorial for making them though if you don’t want to purchase one! She has an absolutely beautiful instagram account, and she is also from Canada!
This rug I’ve had for a couple years now, and it is probably my favorite one that I’ve ever owned. I love that it goes great with farmhouse style decor, and is both modern and neutral. It has held up great—and vacuums and spot cleans well too (which is important in my house!)
